Robert Frost said writers in English have a choice between two meters: strong iambic and weak iambic.
I guess readers in English only have those two choices, as well.
Syllable stress.

There's this monk guy, right, called ORM. He lived yonks ago and he wanted to straighten out the spelling rules.
At that time, English was pretty much being revolutionised.
He says that for words like 'batting' and 'bating', the first syllable (if it's a short one) has two have double consonants. Batting.
If it's a long first syllable, then just one consonant plz. Bating.
But they don't like Orm, so his method was ignored.
'course, if it were passed through, we'll have to write 'HAVVING', 'COMMING', 'SEXXING', etc.
But generally, I think most English words are like that? Tapping/taping, ratting/rating, blahblahblah.
floobles under your hair squeakily~
I swear and curse in trochaic pentameter.
